About ColrShift

There is nothing to sign up for at ColrShift. It is a color converter and contrast checker, it does one thing — converts colors between HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK, checks WCAG AA and AAA contrast against black and white, and generates five harmony palettes — and it gives you the answer without first asking who you are.

What ColrShift is for

Search for developer tools and you will mostly find pages that bury a single calculation under cookie walls, newsletter modals and three paragraphs of filler. We built ColrShift as the opposite: one focused tool that converts colors between HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK, checks WCAG AA and AAA contrast against black and white, and generates five harmony palettes, and nothing between you and the answer. Keeping it that narrow is what makes it fast, and what makes it honest about how the result is produced.

The method behind it

Everything runs on your own device. When you use the tool, it converts every format through a common RGB representation, then computes the relative luminance of the two colors to get the WCAG contrast ratio you can compare against the 4.5:1 and 3:1 thresholds. Nothing about the method is hidden: if you want to check a result by hand, the description above is the algorithm the page actually uses, and every figure you see comes from it rather than from a black box.

Privacy, by design

Nothing you enter is transmitted. The color values you type is handled by the page on your own machine, which is why ColrShift has no server-side copy to lose, leak or hand over — and why it still works once you go offline.

Who tends to use it

Keeping the lights on

ColrShift costs nothing to use, and the hosting is paid for by advertising. That advertising is kept separate from the calculation: it cannot see what you type and it has no influence on the result.
